Inslee pushes for clean energy in new book, "Apollo's Fire"

November 2, 2007

By MATTHEW DALY ASSOCIATED PRESS in the SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER  WASHINGTON -- For years, Rep. Jay Inslee has pushed for what he calls a new "Apollo Project" to achieve energy independence. Now the Washington state Democrat has written a book outlining his vision for a clean energy economy he says will combat global warming, help break the country's addiction to oil and create tens of thousands of jobs. With co-author Bracken Hendricks, a senior fellow at the liberal Center for American Progress, Inslee has written "Apollo's Fire," a passionate argument for the economic shift the authors say is necessary to ease America into a clean-energy revolution. The book, subtitled "Igniting America's Clean Energy Economy," was published last month by Island Press.

Fluorescent bulbs were climate change activism on training wheels. For the next generation, it's time for a green revolution, for overthrowing the old order and ushering in the new, environmental and local elected leaders say.

They talk about a campaign as passionate as the civil rights movement, as nationally unifying as World War II patriotism. They're talking put-a-man-on-the-moon-sized investments in the development of clean energy. They want strict standards for vehicle greenhouse-gas emissions. They're begging the public to pressure national politicians to champion ambitious efforts to curb global warming.

In 1961 John F. Kennedy called for his nation to put a man on the moon in ten years. That was a formidable challenge -- and today's energy challenge is even greater. Congressman Jay Inslee has been calling for an end our oil addiction and the accompanying transformation of our economy. He calls it the Apollo Project for energy and his new book, "Apollo's Fire," spells out his vision.

Apollo's Fire arrived the other day. Since the book was already released on Amazon, and very soon many readers will no doubt share their critiques online, we won't rush to add our review to the pile. Here is a synopsis of the concept behind the book. We'd like to hear your thoughts.

Co-written by Rep. Jay Inslee, "Apollo's Fire: Igniting America's Clean Energy Economy" celebrates the drive and ingenuity of grass-roots Americans while damning the lethargy of the federal government.

President Bush discovered the cause of renewable resources last year and scheduled a visit to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado.

But 32 workers had just been laid off from the government-run laboratory. A last-minute "transfer" of $5 million put them back on the job just in time to greet the president.

Last night Jason and I had the honor of representing the Northwest Progressive Institute at a launch event for Apollo's Fire: Igniting America's Clean Energy Economy, a new book coauthored by our very own Representative Jay Inslee and Bracken Hendricks, a respected Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress. The book is a guided tour through many of the new technologies that hold the promise of solving the climate crisis and other environmental challenges.

It is filled with the optimistic, can-do spirit that John F. Kennedy brought to the space race in 1961 when he said:
